Optical Coherence Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography

To get your eyes checked for Macular Disease and Glaucoma, have an eye exam with real depth:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) with High Definition Digital Retinal Photography provides stunning images of the vital parts of the back of the eye.

Optical what??!  According to WikiPedia, OCT “is an optical signal acquisition and processing method. It captures micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within optical scattering media (e.g., biological tissue). Optical coherence tomography is an interferometric technique using long wavelength light to penetrate into the scattering medium… it is used to obtain detailed images from within the retina”…without using any damaging radiation.

The Optical Coherence Tomographer at North Lakes Optometry performs 50,000 scans per second to build up detailed images. The eye is scanned whilst the patient sits in a chair. Each scan takes only a few seconds. It is used to examine the Macula, Optic Nerve (for Glaucoma Diagnosis and Monitoring), and also can be used to locate foreign bodies within corneal tissue to facilitate their removal. The OCT incorporates a High Definition Retinal Camera, so that the scan images are matched to their retinal locations.

This entirely safe procedure has revolutionised the diagnosis and management of many eye diseases, and has previously been available only following referral to a specialist.

At North Lakes Optometry, this State-of-the-Art technology is being used to diagnose and monitor eye disease, and, importantly, to screen for and rule out certain eye diseases at a much earlier stage than was possible before.
